Accessibility statement
I'm committed to making this website accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities and neurodivergent users. As a cognitive accessibility practitioner, I hold my own work to the same standards I advocate for.
Standards
This website aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. These guidelines define how to make web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities.
What I've done
- Used semantic HTML landmarks (
<header>,<nav>,<main>,<footer>) throughout - Provided a skip-to-content link for keyboard users
- Ensured all text meets WCAG AA colour contrast ratios (4.5:1 minimum for normal text)
- Made all interactive elements (links, buttons, form controls) reachable and operable via keyboard
- Added visible focus indicators on all interactive elements
- Included meaningful alt text on all images
- Used a dyslexic-friendly typeface (Atkinson Hyperlegible) with generous sizing and line height
- Kept body text at 18px minimum with a maximum line width for comfortable reading
- Avoided auto-playing media, animations, and flashing content
- Provided a dark/light mode toggle that respects system preferences
- Tested with automated tools (axe, WAVE) and manual keyboard/screen reader testing
Cognitive accessibility
Beyond standard WCAG requirements, I've designed this site with cognitive accessibility in mind:
- Reduced visual noise: minimal decorative elements, generous whitespace
- Clear content hierarchy: consistent headings and predictable page structure
- Plain language: no jargon without explanation
- Left-aligned text throughout (no justified text)
- Consistent navigation across all pages
- No time limits or auto-updating content
Known limitations
Despite my best efforts, some areas may not yet be fully accessible:
- Third-party embeds (such as the Substack subscribe widget) may not meet all accessibility standards, and these are outside my direct control
- Some older content may have accessibility gaps that I'm working to address
